Laboratory safety is extremely important. Rules are made, not to make life more inconvenient, but to keep the people working there out of danger. Chemistry labs in particular can be extremely hazardous. Making sure you use proper lab safety supplies can help reduce the risk of injury or death.

While working in a lab, there are some general guidelines for what to do or not to do. Here is a general list:

• Do not wear long or loose clothing and tie back long hair. Acid spills can result in fires and long and loose clothing can both get in the way and cause those spills.
• Always wear safety goggles or glasses.
• Follow all material safety data sheets (MSDS) for the safest way to use and dispose of the materials.
• Learn how to properly use all lab equipment before experimenting.
• Know where all safety gear such as fire extinguishers, eyewash, fire blankets, etc. are at all times.
• Follow all instructions when mixing chemicals.
• Do not bring food or drink into the lab and do not smell or taste any chemicals.
